The Russian Football Union has confirmed that it will go to great lengths in order to ensure that coach Fabio Capello receives his outstanding pay in the next few weeks. The Italian is one of the best paid coaches in international football with an annual salary of just over $ 10 million.

Russia have been paying extravagant sums for their coaches due to funding from rich benefactors like Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich. However, this funding has dried up in recent years and Russia have been unable to meet their contractual requirements. The situation has been worsened even further by the collapse of oil prices.

Russia depends heavily on oil in order to meet its budget. The RFU’s president Nikolai Tolstykh has confirmed that he has held talks with Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko in order to overcome the problem.

Capello has so far been largely silent on this issue, while he has also had to deny suggestions that Russia’s poor form is a result of this payment issue. The veteran coach was last paid his monthly due back in July. Since then, Russia have injured just one victory in the last eight matches. Their Euro 2016 qualification hopes have suffered immensely due to this poor form. Russia sit third in the table behind Austria and Sweden. They will have to go through a play-off if the table finishes as such.

“We will use any official source (of funds) which can help the RFU to fulfil its obligations to Capello,” saidTolstykh. Another factor impacting Russia is the huge collapse in their currency ruble compared to Euros and dollars. It is estimated that Russia will have to fork out more than 40% in order to meet the agreement. Capello has ruled out resigning from the job in the short term, but this could change in the next few months.
